We joined up with the Project Contest winner Dylan for the Massive Bike Ride and Campout. We had to switch camping spots at the last minute to Heyburn State Park after our original camping spot in Cataldo was completely flooded. There was an absurd amount of food and drink for the 11 or 12 people who showed up, so gluttony was in full effect. You couldn't have asked for better weather and the trail was packed with all kinds of bikers enjoying it.
The trail from the campsite to Harrison wanders around Chatcolet Lake, hugging the shore. Harrison itself seems like this isolated down based around the trail, but there are plenty of people who use the town for it's lake access and make a leisurely drive in. There's not much to the town....a bike shop, grocery store, restaurant, ice cream shop, and a couple other small stores. Dylan even swooped a sweet, instantly screen printed, tank top for $11. The park in the center of town is the focal point and was packed with families of bikers taking a quick break.
After taking in some lunch, we kept on trucking towards Cataldo. Everything was completely flooded and trail access was limited in some areas. Since the water had creeped up to the trail's edge, we ran into a moose, who I then road with for a bit. (check out the video below). There were many a pitstop along the way, but all in all we rode over fifty miles and everyone seemed to still have some energy, especially after the ice cream on the way back and a dip in the freezing water.
Luckily we had basically an entire side of the campground to ourselves after we monopolized most of the spots as bikes rode from campsite to campsite. Dylan brought his mom which was basically loud and awkward and I'm surprised she didn't get us kicked out of the park. Everyone had a great time and got sent home with all kinds of food that didn't even get eaten. Look forward to round 2 of the projects competition soon.
