Markleeville - Grover Hot Springs

Grover Hot Springs

This has been a favorite of ours for a long time. It must be kind of a ‘best kept’ secret because it is rarely very busy. Grover Hot Springs is part of the California State Parks system which operates this year round campground and hot springs. In the winter, the trails and meadows make for great cross country skiing, and in the summer, great hiking.

“Tucked in Hot Springs Valley, surrounded on three sides by Sierra Nevada peaks, Grover Hot Springs offers a soak in a setting as soothing as its waters. The granite peaks, including 10,023-foot Hawkins Peak to the northwest and 9,419-foot Markleeville Peak to the southwest, form an inspiring backdrop to an area that’s been attracting visitors since the 1850s.”

At any point in the day (up until 8pm, though this varies by season) for $5, you can enjoy a hot springs pool and regular swimming pool with showers - great after a long hike or skiing. And we all know how therapeutic hot springs can be - the Russians and Eastern Europeans who are always present at Grover are testimony to that. The hot springs are non-sulfurous so you won’t have to contend with the odor. It’s communal, bathers can sit in one hot pool (102 to 105 degrees) fed by six mineral springs, and one cool pool.

If you hike, be sure to bring insect repellant, the mosquitoes are very aggressive because of the boggy meadows and the nearby stream. Grover is in the historic city of Markleeville of off Highway 89, southeast from Lake Tahoe, not far from the Nevada border in Alpine County. Markleeville has a population of 150 and is the County seat with some lodging, restaurants and shops, and it is a favorite destination for bikers (especially the local saloon.)
