PROJECT: TRIP TO JAPAN

My girlfriend and I have been dying to go on a trip to Japan for a while now. We hope to travel there this coming summer and check out pretty much everything. I used to live there, and know several sweet places that need listed on GSG. Travel would be mainly in and around Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, etc. Also, a trip north to Sapporo to visit my family in Japan would be in order, not to mention visiting the many famous ramen stands there that basically originated the dish. We would fly into Narita International Airport, and from that point on, travel by train, foot, or cab. Lodging would be in hostels or similarly modest settings. Example locations would be the giant buddhas in kamakura, landmark tower in yokohama, various districts in Tokyo, several bike shops in and around Tokyo, a keirin race, a sumo match, o-bon festivals (depending on when we're there), etc. Basically we'd like to cram as much as we can into about a week or two of travel around Japan, taking in the sites, possibly buying a keirin track bike, picking up some woodblock prints, and taking plenty of notes for all of you here on GSG. I know for a fact there's a little back alley automated yakiteri stand that needs some play on here, I just need to find it in downtown Yokosuka again. So, c'mon everybody, send me to Japan!

How the prize money will be used: $1000 toward travel expenses to, and while in Japan

Can I hitch a ride? Seriously, I'm headed to Osaka this winter for a wedding, any good advice on where to go, what to see, or what to do?

I haven't done much in that region of Japan, most my activities were concentrated around Tokyo, Yokohama, and then up north in Sapporo. If you have the time, definitely hit up Yokohama and Tokyo. There's so much going on around there. It's also cool to check out the outskirts of cities too. When I lived in Yokosuka, there was the city, and within a couple miles, it tapered off into rice paddies and little shrines and temples, with residential communities sprinkled throughout. If you're a morning person, hit up the fish markets super early, when they auction fish off and such. As far as food goes, there's plenty of cool little places tucked into back alleys. Also, the basement of pretty much any department store in Japan is a giant grocery/deli. There's really so much cool stuff in Japan, it's hard to recommend places. Tourist spots can be played out, but areas around them are usually cool. Too bad you're going in the winter, or I'd be down for a "carpool" to Japan. I have no idea if there's group rates for flights or anything.

how'd you fix that? we broke some other shit...
